Demotions may occur at any time throughout the month by an authorized supervisor.
An investigator wishing to demote someone must have the evidence to support the demotion as well as authorization for the demotion (if the investigator is not already authorized by rank) before opening a ticket to inform the deputy.
All evidence must be provided to the deputy along with a "Reason for Demotion" title from the list below.
A demotion may come from a punishment or continued observation of a deputy's performance. For whatever reason it may occur, it should be considered less of a penalty and more of a learning opportunity where deputies can reflect on their shortcomings and work to improve in the future.
Demotions may not be served as a way to target an individual. If a member feels they are being targeted, please make a BCSO report or a department complaint.
All department penalties may be appealed within 10 days of being issued. All appeals are reviewed & voted upon by the BCSO heads team.
Targeting - An act of singling out a single/group of individuals for illegitimate reasons. (Mass reporting one person, watching and waiting for a deputy to mess up/break a rule, constant picking on/bullying members).
Do not confuse targeting with someone doing their job - If a deputy was reported, the investigator is NOT targeting by opening an investigation & issuing the deputy a punishment.
Harassment vs Joking - Members may joke around a lot, which is fine. However, there is a line between jokes and Harassment.
Joking is when both individuals know it's a joke, and the initiating party doesn't target real personal issues with the other member.
Harassment can be considered many things, like mentioning a person's mental disability or disrespecting one's family member.
